Does Battlefield 3 have anything to do with battlefield 1942 and battlefield 2?

I am asking because I heard someone say battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2 had no Missions. I was wandering if that was true. I don't want to get Battlefield 3 and not know what is going on.Does Battlefield 3 have anything to do with battlefield 1942 and battlefield 2?
